Welcome back to our vlog today where our topic is, What is Biohacking and Do I Need to Get Into It? I want to cover this because I think this term is tossed around a lot today and I think you may be curious about it. There is a lot of discussion around it. So I wanted to give you guys some more information and my personal take on it.
What is biohacking?
If we break down that term, bio and hacking, we see that the bio has to do with our biology. It has to do with our body, the way our body functions, all our natural processes in the body from sleep to performance and so on. And hacking is of course trying to get one up on the system or trying to decode or improve.
In a sense, biohacking is really trying to use science and/or technology to improve our body’s functioning. It could be our brain power, our sleep, it could be many different aspects of how our bodies work.
Now, there’s a huge range of biohacking, so I want to be clear about that from the start. There’s trends that come and go. There’s all sorts of ways that we can get into this. Some biohackers claim that you could have superhuman powers.
A study published in the Applied and Translational Genomics Journal found that biohacking was actually very controversial because there were so many different practices that weren’t actually backed up with scientific proof and medical backing.
I just want to go through some forms of biohacking. Of course, there was the trend of loading your coffee with tons of butter and tons of oil to put your body into ketosis. There’s biohacking with supplements. In fact, there are some biohackers out there that take 150 supplements a day and sometimes more.
There’re some that actually implant computer chips into their ears or hands to regulate body temperature or blood pressure, so there are many different forms of it. People will sleep with different systems in their bed and they’ll put cold water into their bed. I mean, it just goes on and on and on.
My take on Biohacking
First of all, I’m a big fan of self-improvement and self-love and living our best life. I want to get that straight. However, the nature of biohacking as it can be portrayed, feels like it comes from a place of lack or trying to hack nature. We’re not enough, we’re not good enough.
I personally know people that really get into it and it’s never enough and they feel like they need to go to more and more external means to sleep better, perform better, look better, and you need to buy all these gadgets. You feel like you need to buy into all this stuff to get better.
Biohacking and Mother Nature
Personally, we want to live in accordance with mother nature. Mother nature is our highest teacher and ultimately, we want to respect nature. I find that the closer we live to nature and we incorporate natural practices, the more naturally beautiful we become, the more naturally healthy we become. This goes back to Ayurveda, which is the oldest medical science and yoga and just more natural practices.
I’ll get into my take to naturally optimize your body in a moment, however, I don’t think it’s healthy to subscribe to the idea that we’re not enough and we need all this stuff from the outside. Solluna, the name of our brand, is the sun and the moon. I have great respect for the rhythms of nature, for the cycles and the seasons. And I think there’s a lot of ways to elevate that.
How to Naturally Optimize your Body
They don’t have to be super expensive, it certainly don’t involve taking 150 pills and certainly don’t promote this idea of lack, lack, lack. I think our bodies are incredibly resilient and intelligent and given the right diet and the right lifestyle, we can really elevate ourselves and feel amazing.
It’s not that we don’t want to self-improve, but it’s that we don’t get obsessed and go down this rabbit hole of feeling not enoughness or feeling that we can’t be healthy or well without having to spend all this money on a million different tools and gadgets.
Through Good Sleep
I believe in a natural way to optimize the body, and number one is through good sleep. Spending less time on our devices, eating dinner a little bit earlier, having an evening practice like an Abyanga self oil massage, meditation, reading, journaling, getting our thoughts out.
These are all ways to get into a good sleep pattern. We have a whole course on this. Sleep is a great way to optimize your body and you don’t necessarily need a million different gadgets to do that.
Through Whole Food Nutrition
Nutrition with whole foods. When we just look at all the abundance around eating greens, lentils, unprocessed foods, getting a wide variety of nutrient dense foods into our bodies is going to elevate our health, our energy and our moods.
You can even really optimize your super foods and plants if you want to look for more concentrated versions like spirulina and cumin and turmeric. You can add in things that are natural but very powerful. I think lemons are a super food. Broccoli is another super food. You can also add in maca, some medicinal mushrooms. In addition, you can elevate your diet as well through the abundance that comes from nature.
Through the Four Cornerstones of Solluna
I also want to mention the Four Cornerstones of Solluna, which I think is very, very powerful. It’s our version of biohacking, through lifestyle elevation and is energy, just like quantum physics teaches.
It’s not just food, although food is our first cornerstone. Second is body, so how we sleep, how we take care of our skin, how we exercise, the supplements we take. Number Three is emotional well-being and Fourth is spiritual growth.
I don’t care how much biohacking you do or how many devices you use to boost your mitochondria or your recovery rates or whatever. If you’re not healthy in processing emotions and feelings, there’s always going to be inflammation in your body. You’re always going to have a tough time sleeping and have a lot of stress, which is going to imbalance hormones and your adrenal system.
The spiritual part is connecting with your essence. This is where deep contentment, peace, joy and healthy relationships come from. Again, this is something you can never get from a pill or being in a float tank for hours, or whatever else it is.
Holistic Approach to Biohacking
This holistic lifestyle, which is food, body, emotions and spirit, is the way to get the best results. And you don’t have to spend tons of money or feel like you’re not enough. You can work on a holistic level, which in my opinion, is the most powerful, and will help you reach your highest levels of health, wellness and beauty.
To connect to that peace, joy and inner power- that is your birthright. You know you are a unique being and there’s no one else in the world who can give what you can give. Fostering that is the way I promote, I recommend and I love to share with you more.
We also have a free download if you haven’t checked it out yet. An E-book on the Four Cornerstones if you want to check it out, there’s lots of tips, recipes, ideas and practices to get you started.
Thank you so much for tuning in, Beauty. I will be back here next week, and of course we’re on the Feel Good Podcast and social every week. Lots of different ways to connect. Take care of yourself. Remember you are enough as you are! Sending you lots of love, and I will see you back here soon.
